Founding Myths and Heritage vs. History

Revolutionary War historian Ray Raphael discusses his book, Founding Myths:  Stories that Hide Our Patriotic Past, and talks about the differences between  history and heritage.  He also talks about ways to confront heritage myths.

  1. Excellent speech by Ray. I took care to make note of what he said regarding history and heritage. “History is always about the past exclusively and its modalities are inquiry and understanding.” This is a key point in separating history and heritage. They are not the same thing. “Heritage is how we use the past and see it in the present. It is more about cultural identity and affirmation.”

    Ray nails it down pretty well and this is applicable to all areas of American History, not just the Revolution era he was addressing. Heritage is not necessarily accurate and is often how groups of people choose to employ elements of the past for their own reasons and interests. Tourism is a huge issue and often reinforces erroneous elements in order to construct a business model. That is just one interest that chooses heritage over history.

    1. I agree, Jimmy. Heritage is how people today use historical information (not necessarily history) to further an agenda of some kind, be it self-identification, socialization, self-esteem, or some other reason.
