Southern Unionists in the Civil War

This is Dr. Elizabeth Varon at the joint American Civil War Museum, Nau Center for Civil War History, and Library of Virginia symposium held at the Library of Virginia. She’s speaking here about “Recovering the History of Southern Unionism in the Civil War.” Dr. Varon always delivers a terrific presentation, and she does so again here.

The video’s description reads, “Elizabeth Varon, author of, “Armies of Deliverance: A New History of the Civil War,” talked about Southern Unionists during the Civil War. She described efforts to aid the Union by Richmond spy Elizabeth Van Lew and former slaves who joined the Union Army. This talk was part of the American Civil War Museum’s annual symposium at the Library of Virginia and co-hosted by the University of Virginia Center for Civil War History.”
