The Hard Hand of War

Here’s Professor Mark Grimsley from the precursor to the Sacred Trust lectures at Gettysburg. These were sponsored by the Greystone’s American History Store [now just the American History Store]. This lecture was in July of 2001. The Q&A is also interesting because he deals with a lot of misconceptions in the audience.

The video’s description reads, “Professor Grimsley discussed his book, The Hard Hand of War: Union Military Policy Toward Southern Civilians, 1861-1865, published by Cambridge University Press. The author said that the policy of the U.S. Congress towards the Confederate States resulted in better treatment of Southern civilians as well as southern soldiers by the Union Army. After the presentation Mr. Grimsley answered questions from members of the audience.”
