Here’s Candice Shy Hooper talking about her book, Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War for Better and for Worse. This is a pretty good discussion. Unfortunately, the interviewer botches several details. Hooper does correct a couple of them. Hooper does misunderstand the Frémont situation a bit, I think she misunderstands Mary Lincoln, and I don’t think she has a good take on George B. McClellan, but overall what she says is fine.
The video’s description reads, “Candice Shy Hooper talked about her book Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War for Better and for Worse. The women profiled are Jessie Frémont, Nelly McClellan, Ellen Sherman, and Julia Grant.”
You can read an article she wrote regarding Julia Grant here.
