The Civil War Battle Series: Sherman in Georgia

Here’s Dr. Mark DePue giving a presentation on William T. Sherman’s campaigns in Georgia. He starts with the Atlanta Campaign and then discusses the March to the Sea. Dr. James Cornelius talks about the political issues and the 1864 election. This presentation was given at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

The presentation is very shallow from the point of view of analysis. Dr. DePue appears to be unaware of the latest scholarship regarding John Bell Hood, and I think it would have been much better if he had divided the presentation into two separate presentations, one on the Atlanta campaign and one on the March to the Sea. That would have allowed a more in-depth discussion of both campaigns, including more analysis. It’s a fairly decent overview as it is, but it could be so much better.

  1. Very nice I feel like many people who point out Sherman’s march tend to forget or not know about John Bell Hood.
