Thursday, November 19, 2015 was the 152nd Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. We commemorate the occasion of the address, the dedication of the National Cemetery, each year with a ceremony that includes a keynote speaker, a recitation of the address, and a naturalization ceremony for immigrants becoming United States citizens. This year, due to rain, the ceremony took place at Gettysburg College. Garrison Keillor was the keynote speaker. George Buss, a Lincoln portrayer from Freeport, Illinois, recited the address, and 16 immigrants from 12 countries became American citizens in a moving ceremony.
Garrison Keillor did a great job, collecting excerpts from twelve soldier letters and melding them into one narrative for a good portion of his address, allowing us to hear from the soldiers themselves about their experiences and their thoughts.
