Here’s Michele Cohen, the Curator for the Architect of the US Capitol, giving a presentation with some excellent photographs on the history and construction of the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial in Washington, DC.
The description for the video reads, “Michele Cohen provided an overview of the Grant Memorial, including its site, the artist who created it, the current conservation project, as well as a discussion of the Grant Memorial competition.”
I found this very interesting, particularly the segment on conservation. One notable error. Edward Casey’s father, Thomas Lincoln Casey, was an engineer, not a physician who attended Grant during his final illness. In 1888 he was promoted to BG and appointed the Chief of Engineers. Among his numerous projects, he oversaw the completion of the Washington Monument and helped design the State, War and Navy Building (now the Eisenhower Executive Office Building) as well as the Thomas Jefferson Building (now the Library of Congress). Thomas’ father was Silas Casey, the CW general.
