Rare Civil War Document, Discovered in Drawer, Outlines Rights for NC’s Ex-slaves

I came across this story where a lawyer in North Carolina found a copy of Major General John Schofield’s General Orders No. 46 outlining rights of former slaves in Reconstruction North Carolina.  The lawyer, Angela Smith-Crumpler, found the document in an underwear drawer.  From the story:  ” ‘The document essentially is the start of Reconstruction in this state,’ Smith-Crumpler said. ‘It was dictated by Schofield, then several copies were printed and delivered across the state.’ ”

From the article, it looks as though she plans to donate the document to the new North Carolina Civil War History Center, to be in Fayetteville, NC.
