The 22nd USCT Enters Richmond

I came across this article about the 22nd USCT being one of the first units to enter Richmond on April 3, 1865.  The article tells us, “A majority of them were free men from New Jersey who had taken the battle against slavery right into the heart of the rebelling states. Almost unknown today, they were one of the most-renowned fighting units during the waning days of the Civil War.”  After compiling an admirable combat record outside Petersburg and Richmond, soldiers from the 22nd accompanied President Abraham Lincoln as he walked around Richmond, and the 22nd was the only black unit to take part in Lincoln’s Washington, DC funeral procession.

You can see some additional links covering the 22nd USCT here.
