Veterans Return to Virginia after the Civil War: Gettysburg Winter Lecture

Here’s Ranger Beth Parnicza of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park doing a wonderful job talking about veterans returning to battlefields after the war.

The video description reads: ” ‘Going Back: Returning to Fields of Glory,’ a winter lecture at Gettysburg National Military Park by Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania Military Park Ranger Beth Parnicza. Beth tells us about veterans returning to battlefields, what calls them back, what they say when they return, and the events that transpired to bring them together.”

Very good, very good Al. Thinking of those veterans reminds me of Vietnam veterans I have known, two college classmates in particular who fought there and survived. At class reunions 5, 10, 15 years after the war they were never willing to talk about their experiences in Southeast Asia. Then in the late 80s/early 90s both returned to visit the country. When I asked them why one said (paraphrasing here), “I don’t know. It’s just something I had to do.” The other said something about closure, that everything he had done since had been affected by what he had done there in the late 60s. CW veterans most likely had similar thoughts and feelings.
