Jefferson Davis and His Cause

Here’s Bud Bowie, a member of the US Army Command and General Staff College’s faculty, in a 2012 lecture at the Kansas City Public Library, giving his take on Jefferson Davis as confederate commander-in-chief and the Civil War in general.  It’s a pretty good lecture, with some humor spicing it up.

Not only the humor, which as you note “spices” things up, but his Power Point presentation was by far the best of any I have seen in these lectures. And, as I have noted of others, he talks to us and does not simply read his presentation verbatim. As the descendent of a slave-owning family in Maryland, he sure doesn’t shy away from the topic, “What caused the Civil War?” I find that quite refreshing. Some of his humor, unfortunately, seems to have gone right over his audience’s heads. “That great Democrat, Pierce,” did not even get a snicker. His wonderful long pauses during the presentation are a wonderful device. This is one of the best presentations I have ever seen. I would give it a higher rating than “pretty good.”
