Here’s an interview with Ed Bearss telling about how he and his team found the USS Cairo.
I took an “Ed Bearss” tour of Vicksburg many, many years ago. As I remember it, he said almost nothing about the “Cairo” or his role in finding her and digging her out of the muck. Fantastic presentation. Thanks for sharing this one. Loved his answer to “Who wrote the best Civil War books?” His answer? Bruce Catton. My favorite always (perhaps because he was from Michigan) and the first CW history I ever read. Have also been to his grave in Benzonia. Have never learned how he managed to be buried in the G.A.R. section among the veterans he admired so very much.
