Some Sunshine

In yesterday’s post I highlighted the astonishing lack of knowledge among some students at Texas Tech University.

It’s not all doom and gloom.

I’ve come across this story out of Phoenix, Arizona where a middle school teacher has hundreds of students reenact the Battle of Gettysburg.

“About 400 students dressed up in uniforms, and then took on their roles as Union and Confederate soldiers. The students then performed a full-scale reenactment of the historic battle.”

Not only did they reenact the battle, but, “The kids have been working for months to create their own costumes, weapons and flags, and have been studying the facts and strategies of the Civil War.”

Marci Olsen, the Social Studies Department Chair, has been honchoing this event since 2004.  These kids won’t have any problem saying who won the Civil War or when the Battle of Gettysburg was fought.

What an outstanding program.  Ms. Olsen is extremely creative and obviously very dedicated to her students.  Be sure to check out the video at the website.

No, it’s not all doom and gloom. Note, however, that Marci Olsen, is a middle school teacher. I knew several middle school teachers in Carson City-Crystal who continued to teach the Civil War after I retired in 1999. I know that because I used to take in some of my CW antiques as late as 2004. I have lost contact with them and do not know if they are still doing that today. Chances are most of them are also retired by now.
