Lincoln’s Gamble

Here’s Todd Brewster, speaking about his new book, Lincoln’s Gamble:  How the Emancipation Proclamation Changed the Course of the Civil War.  He gave this presentation at the National Archives.  I disagree with him about George B. McClellan.  McClellan wasn’t disloyal.  To tell you the truth, I think it detracts from the presentation and expectations about the book.  I’m not so sure that this book is really needed since Allen C. Guelzo’s book is still the standard.

  1. He lost me at “slavery was dying a slow death.” But his recent article in Salon (http://www.salon.com/2014/09/07/obamas_lincoln_problem_which_lincoln_is_he_the_great_orator_or_the_great_obfuscator/) didn’t encourage me to hope for too much.

    1. Something else that detracts from it.
